Hi all !
It's a busy and successful season out there for Mac Students who are learning how to run an organic vegetable production ! This is why this blog has not been so active lately !
Instead, please visit our website www.mseg.weebly.com since it is updated more regularly !

The Macdonald Student-run Ecological Gardens (MSEG) won the Catalyst Award for Lessons Learned in Sustainability ! Read about it here. The MSEG project is, indeed, full of lessons to learn ! We would like to take this occasion to thank the Office of Sustainability and Lilith Wyatt in particular, as well as Caroline Begg for their amazing support.

I have been thinking a lot recently about how lucky we are to be working next to two established organic farms as we progress in this project. Not only for obvious reasons, like the privilege of working on certified organic land (even if we ourselves are not certified) and gaining access to machinery that we otherwise would not have, both farms being nice enough to till our fields and retill MSEGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13888484324055852659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6201763533161791771.post-53749288607537767012011-08-07T09:35:00.005-04:002011-08-07T09:47:59.138-04:00WikitrailI went on a Wikitrail /Wikitrail/: n. A belated post about something that happened on April 23rd;
A sunny Saturday afternoon, one of the first real days of spring. We were out at the Meditation Garden fixing up our rose bed.
Note, when planting roses, or planting anything in raised beds, we learnt:

Hey folks!
Spring is finally here…and so the seeding has begun! Last week, we gathered in the greenhouse to seed collards and jalapeno peppers for our acre plot in Senneville, and three varieties of onions for our Hort. Centre plot. T’was a pretty nice time lining up the little seeds in their trays, getting some sun on our faces, and earth under our finger nails for the first time this year - MSEGhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13888484324055852659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6201763533161791771.post-53773739341056967542011-03-22T00:32:00.004-04:002011-03-22T17:33:47.988-04:00A New YearHappy new year! For the past little while, our seedlings have started coming up and we have had some trouble trying to weed. Seedlings are really hard to tell apart from weeds, but we have been doing our best. Yesterday we were gingerly weeding around what we thought were are young persian cress seedlings when our friend Chris let us know Katrynahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15199906788636478121noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6201763533161791771.post-86654366390612737602010-06-04T10:20:00.007-04:002010-06-04T10:46:09.887-04:00Flea beetles and RAIN (an uplifting post)We are running into some problems in the garden. But here at MSEG we are pretty hardcore and can handle them. The first is the flea beetle infestation in the community garden. These little guys (see picture) have been attacking the eggplants and peppers, as well as all of the Ladybug and Purple Martin plots. They avoided our May Queen lettuce for some reason (thanks guys). The plot with a G-shaped path has been named Lady Bug in the honor of this beneficial insect, natural predator of the aphids. We thought this shape of path would maximize space on our plot.
